Director of Curriculum & Instruction: Josh Simons

josh simons Josh began his career as a junior high math teacher in the public school system. His appreciation for curriculum development was enhanced after joining Grief Comfort as the teen director. During the summer of 2017 Josh began to build a unique six week Bible Study entitled; The Comforting Word for adults who had finished the grief support group but wanted a better understanding of what God says about life tragedies. Josh knew for himself, and others, that often during difficult times of loss we question God and His goodness. These questions might look like:
  • Why does God allow life losses?
  • Does God care about my grief?
  • Where is God in my pain?
  • How does God help us when tragedy strikes?
  • Can I trust God?
Josh designed this exclusive Bible Study curriculum about God's response to our grief and sorrow using a convenient workbook; filled with Bible stories about grief and the character of God's nature and goodness. Those who attend the Bible Study are pleasantly amazed and encouraged to learn what God says about grief, loss, and our heartaches. The Comforting Word Bible Study is offered three times each year: winter, summer, & fall; following the same schedule as the adult grief support groups. Check the website calendar to learn when, where, and the time this study is offered. Josh earned a Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction.

Director of Adult Grief Support: Brenda Doerfler

brenda Doerfler As a past university administrator & college professor Brenda desires all adults learn about the varied grieving processes in life. Losing a loved one to death is NOT the only grieving process experienced. Grief Comfort provides hurting people a place to receive help, education and hope in their journey of bereavement. She believes the tragic heartache of loss can teach people about themselves and provide invaluable life experience. Brenda earned a Master of Science in adult learning & education.

Co-Directors of SPREE: Angee Chase & Susan Keast

angeeChase SPREE is a monthly adult social gathering for those grieving a loss who desire a place to go that is safe, fun, and filled with warm smiles. Each monthly SPREE event offers grieving individuals an opportunity to heal healthy by remaining socially active. SPREE meets each month on the second Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Paola, KS Journey Church located at 7 Baptiste Drive. This event was created for individuals who don't want to deal with the "couples" social experience; but still want to get out of the house to enjoy the company of good friends, eating delicious food, playing fun games, and visiting with others. SPREE also offers a place to go to sit, relax, and enjoy the evening with friends.

Susan Keast SPREE also does fun field trips throughout the year. Angee & Susan understand personal loss and have attended a Grief Comfort support group themselves. They hope you consider attending a SPREE gathering. Contact us if you would like to be added to the SPREE email or mailing list for future invitations.

Director of Prayer: Rita Knutson

ritaKnutson Grief Comfort believes a good educational and caring support group can help after a tragic loss; however we also believe that prayerful support can bring the positive transformation of hope, offering a new and fresh life perspective. It's Grief Comfort's exclusive and successful management of grief for the brokenhearted. That's why we have a team of Prayer Partners all across the United States; who lovingly pray for those grieving and attending our grief support groups. Rita communicates with each prayer partner by phone and email letting them know of various special prayer requests and reminds them to pray for each grief support group when they begin three times each year in the winter, summer, and fall.
